In 2022–2023, QPWS nearly closed access to popular climbing areas Whitinbah Wafers and Wildside in Lamington National Park, despite questionable justifications related to cultural heritage and environmental concerns. The closure was halted after ACAQ's intervention, but ongoing signage and access issues highlight the need for continued advocacy. Brisbane City Council has retired the last 41 concrete bollards at Kangaroo Point, replacing them with 145 stainless steel U-bolts following consultation with ACAQ and the climbing community. This marks the end of an era and a significant upgrade to the cliff’s top-rope and abseil anchor system, improving safety and accessibility for climbers. Although the ACAQ is primarily focused on climbing and access issues in Queensland, we also need to be vigilant in preserving and fighting for access around Australia. Mt Arapiles is a crag of both National and International significance and the situation in Victoria is dire. Importantly, there are some key differences in our law to those in Victoria with ‘safe harbour guidelines’ which if complied with mean that illegal harm under the law do not occur and their are no breaches of the law.
